My Name is Obse Lubo. I was born and raised in an impoverished but lovely city called Nejo, which is located in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. I currently work as a Registered Nurse at Stanford University Medical Center. My passion for nursing emanates from my experience growing up in a place where death due to preventable and treatable infectious diseases is not uncommon. I strongly feel called to give back to a society of which I was once a part through my medical training.
Growing up in Nejo was great and appalling at the same time. Great, because of the unconditional love and kindness that the people have for each other and for total strangers. Appalling, because the vast majority of the people in Nejo live on less than one dollar a day. Widespread poverty, severe unemployment, infant mortality and illiteracy are just some of the deplorable conditions that the people of Nejo endure. In spite of the often insurmountable challenges, the people of Nejo are truly happy and God fearing. I am who I am today because of where I grew up and the people who surrounded me and raised me.
I have become a firm believer that access to adequate health care and education are fundamental rights for all human beings. My dream/vision is to make a difference in the lives of many pregnant women, infants, adolescents and the elderly by making it easier to access basic and quality medical care. I am determined to do what’s humanely possible to prevent and/or reduce the spread of malaria, TB and HIV/AIDs, by educating the local community on how to use clean water, basic hygiene and live a healthy lifestyle, and by providing them with the right medications, when needed.
The medical mission trips led by EAMRF will establish long-term relationships that allow us to revisit Nejo Hospital and the surrounding cities and health centers for a period of several years until the community can sustainably run its own medical system independently. Our aim is to help reduce the spread of infectious disease by at least 25% by the year 2030.
I am in this to make a difference in one soul at a time. To me, there is nothing else or better that I would rather spend my time on than helping the beautiful and loving people of the Oromia region of Ethiopia get access to basic medical care. I hope you will join me in making this dream a reality.
